Ivan Spane

Ivan “Rocky” Spane was born in 1936 in Queens, New York.  He worked as a commercial and celebrity photographer for much of his early career.  In the vein of the transformative work of Helen Levitt, Vivian Maier, and Bruce Davidson, this never-before-seen body of work captures New York City life of the 1960s and early 70s.

It presents an unvarnished view of America in these tumultuous years, revealing scenes of the burgeoning women’s movement, sexism, patriotism, class and poverty.  The Drawing Room and Curated State are proud to present this intimate and compelling snapshot of a city undergoing fundamental change.
